Sulfur is an element which is known since ancient times. It sometimes naturally occurs in its elemental form and as such often is emitted in volcanic eruptions. Sulfur has a complex chemistry and is essential to life. On the other hand, it has some very toxic and environmentally hazardous compounds. Notable here are hydrogen sulfide, which gives rotten eggs their smell and sulfur dioxide and trioxide, which, when dissolved in water, give sulfurous acid and sulfuric acid.

Sulfur chunk Sulfur splints
Left: Chunk of pure sulfur, 1 x 2 cm, 1-2 grams.
Right: Small sulfur splints.

Volcanic sulfur Pyrite
Left: Sulfur field on the volcanic island Nea Kameni in Greece.
Right: Natural pyrite, an iron-sulfur compound (FeS2), 17 grams, edge length 1.5-2 cm. The common mineral forms cubic crystals. It is often mistaken for gold and therefore is also named fool's gold.

Lapis lazuli
Lapis lazuli, a complex mineral mixture. The blue color is caused by S3- radicals. 115 grams, 5 x 7 cm.
